Instead of ordering separate printed labels for every flavor or product variation, Smart Label Systems allow you to keep your branding consistent while printing the changing information yourself.
How It Works
- We Design the Label
Your branding, colors, logos, and permanent information are professionally designed. - We Print the Label Shell
The branded portion is printed in bulk with designated blank areas for variable information. - We Create Your Template
We help set up a printable template designed to work with your thermal printer. - You Print On Demand
Print product names, flavors, ingredients, weights, dates, QR codes, barcodes, and batch numbers as needed.
Real Label System Examples
These labels are designed with blank areas on purpose. The color branding is printed in bulk, then the changing details can be added later using a thermal transfer printer.

Price Printable Thermal Labels
Pricing depends on your label size, shape, material, quantity, and how the printable area needs to be set up. Use the custom product label quoter to price the label portion, then let us know you are interested in a printable thermal label system.
Recommended Equipment
For this setup, we recommend a thermal transfer printer and an external roll holder. The printer adds your variable information to the blank area, while the roll holder helps larger label rolls feed smoothly.

External Label Roll Holder

Which Label Option Is Right for You?
| Label Option | Best For | How It Works |
|---|---|---|
| BOPP Product Labels | Fully printed retail labels for jars, bags, bottles, boxes, and packaging. | Your complete label design is professionally printed and shipped ready to apply. |
| Printable Thermal Labels | Brands with lots of flavors, batches, scents, strains, or product variations. | We print the color branding and blank spaces. You print the changing details yourself. |
| Paper Roll Labels | Budget-friendly indoor labels, short-term use, or simple applications. | Usually less durable than BOPP but useful for some basic labeling needs. |
What Are BOPP Labels?
BOPP labels are a durable roll label material commonly used for retail product packaging. They are a great fit for food packaging, jars, bottles, bags, cannabis packaging, cosmetics, candles, and other products that need a polished shelf-ready look.
Compared to basic paper labels, BOPP labels are more resistant to moisture, handling, and general wear. They are available in options like white gloss, white matte, clear, and other specialty finishes depending on the project.
How Printable Thermal Labels Are Different
Printable thermal label systems are designed for flexibility. Instead of printing every product detail in full color, the permanent branding is printed first, and the changing details are added later with a thermal transfer printer.
This is ideal when your brand has many variations but you do not want to order separate labels for every single flavor, scent, batch, or strain.
Example Applications
One branded label can be used across dozens of product variations.
Instead of ordering separate labels for:
- Freeze Dried Apples
- Freeze Dried Peaches
- Freeze Dried Strawberries
- Freeze Dried Pears
- Freeze Dried Bananas
You can print the product name and product-specific information as needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need the exact printer listed above?
The Zebra GK420t is the printer we personally use and have tested with these label systems. It supports both thermal transfer and direct thermal printing, which gives more flexibility.
Other printers may work, but we have not tested every model and cannot guarantee compatibility. Many budget thermal printers are designed mainly for direct thermal labels and may not support the same ribbon-based printing methods.
What’s the difference between thermal transfer and direct thermal printing?
Direct thermal printers create an image by heating specially coated labels. Thermal transfer printers use a ribbon to transfer ink onto the label surface.
The Zebra GK420t supports both methods, which is why we recommend it for this setup.
Can you create the template for me?
Yes. Template setup is part of the system. We create the printable layout so your product names, weights, QR codes, dates, and batch details land in the correct spot.
Do printable thermal labels require perforation?
Perforation is usually recommended because it makes labels easier to separate after printing. Whether it is needed depends on your label setup, printer, and workflow.
Can I print QR codes and barcodes?
Yes. QR codes, barcodes, batch numbers, dates, and SKU information are all great uses for the printable area.
Can I still order fully printed labels?
Yes. Fully printed BOPP labels are still the better option for many businesses. Printable thermal label systems are best when you have lots of changing product details.
Not Sure Which Option Is Right For You?
Whether you need fully printed BOPP labels or a printable thermal label system, we’ll help you choose the most cost-effective option for your business.
